Could a lonely, lovelorn, trash compacting robot become the first animated film to win the Best Picture Oscar at next year’s Academy Awards?
While it seems unlikely, the critics certainly feel that Wall-E is deserving, giving it almost unanimously ecstatic reviews.
The film follows the romance between robots Wall-E and Eve circa 2115, as they try to alert the human race that the currently inhabitable planet Earth can be saved.
Pixar’s 9th film opened at Number 1 at the American box office over the weekend, with an impressive $60.5 million.
The film sits at 97% on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, making it the best reviewed film of the year, above Iron Man, Kung Fu Panda, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
Although many of the big Oscar contenders will not be released until November, it is rare for any film to receive as many positive reviews as Wall-E has.
However, only one animated film has ever been nominated for Best Picture (1991’s Beauty and the Beast), making the odd’s for little Wall-E fairly slim.
Although I can’t say I’ve seen Wall-E yet, I would LOVE to see Pixar get the credit they deserve, considering they’ve released some of the best films of the last decade.
Ratatouille, Finding Nemo and Toy Story 2 are classics that, dare I say, rank alongside E.T as the greatest family films of all time.
And for what it’s worth, I maintain that The Incredibles deserved the Oscar for Best Picture over Million Dollar Baby in 2004.
So although we’ll have to wait until September 18th to enjoy Wall-E and Eve’s adventures, i’m more than happy to help start the Oscar campaign now.

Update: Wall-E is currently ranked 9th on the 250 greatest films of all time on IMDB, above Casablanca, Star Wars and all 3 Lord of the Rings films. Of course, its only collected about 5,000 votes (the average film in the top 50 has around 100,000). It will probably drop over the next couple of weeks. Still, impressive no? Start writing those speeches Pixar!
Update 2: 9,000 votes counted, and it’s risen to Number 6!
Update 3: 35,000 votes counted, and it’s sitting pretty comfortably at 20. Maybe Wall-E really is better than Citizen Kane (sitting at 28)!

well joey, i don’t know what to tell you. either you live in a country where its already opened – and therefore we are supremely jealous of you – or you have a pirated copy, a sin so grave it shall never be absolved. perhaps a pirate copy of “disaster movie” – that i would be willing to forgive. but if not, i sure hope you go and see Wall-E at the cinema when it does come out at ure end. Pixar spend like 6 years on these films – and god they look beautiful. that goes for everyone out there – stay away from pirate copy’s and take my word for it – this is one to save for the big screen!!!
