Make Us Laugh!

I know, it’s very scary here in this post-Love Guru comedy landscape. We’ve just endured a season of unfunny comedies, and we still have Disaster Movie to come.

Normally, the one bright light comes from Judd Apatow, who is as far as i’m concerned, THE man. He has written, directed and produced the funniest films of the last five years including Anchorman, Superbad and The 40-Year-Old Virgin. This year he brings us Will Ferrell‘s Step Brothers and Seth Rogen‘s Pineapple Express, which both look amazing.

Unfortunately, these guys can’t make everything.

However, I’d like to take this opportunity to go beyond Judd Apatow, and beyond the big comedy stars, to show you some trailers for some other upcoming comedies. Sure, we can’t trust Mike Myers or Eddie Murphy anymore, but there’s gotta be some unknowns who are making funny stuff. Just remember, had you heard of anyone from American Pie before that came out?

The first trailer is for Sex Drive, starring Josh Zuckerman and James Marsden. It looks like it’s in the spirt of American Pie, and made me laugh at least a couple of times. It doesn’t look as instantly genius as some of the Apatow flicks, but I would say it’s definitely one to check out.

Next we have Role Models, starring Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott. Although William Scott’s track record post-American Pie is pretty sad, Paul Rudd is always funny, even in the worst of films. Role Models is directed by David Wain (Wet Hot American Summer) and also stars Apatow-alum Christopher Mintz-Plasse (McLovin) and Elizabeth Banks. This film looks extremely likeable.

Finally is the trailer for Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist, starring Michael Cera and Kat Dennings. Sure, Michael Cera is playing his typical awkward teen (Superbad, Arrested Development, Juno). But damnit, I could watch him do that awkward schtick for the rest of my life. The film looks as if it could be the next Juno (or maybe it’s just being sold that way), but there are some genuinely funny scenes in this trailer, and I personally can’t wait to check it out.

So there you go. Here are 3 upcoming comedies that actually look good. Also worth keeping an eye out for is the legendary Kevin Smith‘s newie, Zach and Miri Make A Porno. There is a teaser trailer out, but you’re going to have to find it yourself. It looks hilarious, and makes the vulgar films of Judd Apatow look like Nim’s Island.
