The Avengers – First Details Emerge!

Marvel have revealed the first official details for The Avengers film.

Here is an excerpt from Marvel’s press release, which reveals some very vauge details of the film’s plot: “In a movie event, THE AVENGERS will bring together the super hero team of Marvel Comics characters for the first time ever, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk and more, as they are forced to band together to battle the biggest foe they’ve ever faced.”

Robert Downey Jr and Don Cheadle have signed up to the upcoming Marvel team-up flick. Downey Jr will reprise his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man in both Iron Man 2 and The Avengers. Cheadle (who was recently announced as the replacement for Terrence Howard) will bring to life Colonol James Rhodes/War Machine in both films as well.

It is not confirmed whether or not Edward Norton will reprise his role as Bruce Banner/Hulk in The Avengers. There is even the possibility he wouldn’t need to appear. That is, if a renegade Hulk turns out to be “the biggest foe they’ve ever faced.”

Captain America and Thor’s respective films are all due prior to the release of The Avengers. However, little to no details have been revealed about who will play them. We do know that Daniel Craig turned DOWN the opportunity to play Thor, but that’s it. A shame really.

Iron Man director Jon Favreau will executive produce The Avengers. I wonder if Marvel will be smart enough to snatch him up to direct as well. A few months ago, there were doubts Favreau would return to direct Iron Man 2. The the big rumour was that he wanted to give up the Iron Man sequel in place of helming The Avengers.

With Iron Man 2 out in 2010 and The Avengers in 2011, there may not be enough time for Favreau to direct both. At the moment though, I couldn’t think of a better choice. Maybe Christopher Nolan, but he needs to focus on his own franchise right now. You hear that Nolan! I think you’ve been on holiday long enough. Give us Number 3! Please!

Anyway, exciting stuff! It’s nice to see some official steps taken in the right direction for The Avengers. What do you think? Can The Avengers live up to these ridiculous expectations?
