Comic-scribe Mark Millar is keen to bring an 8-hour Superman saga to the big screen, over the course of three films.
Millar told Empire he would like to see the trilogy filmed back to back, and release each a year apart.
“It’s gonna be like Michael Corleone in the Godfather films, the entire story from beginning to end, you see where he starts, how he becomes who he becomes, and where that takes him,” he said.
“I want to start on Krypton, a thousand years ago, and end with Superman alone on Planet Earth, the last being left on the planet, as the yellow sun turns red and starts to supernova, and he loses his powers.”
Millar is famous for writing the original comic Wanted, upon which the James McAvoy/Angelina Jolie film was loosely based. Much like his egomaniacal characters, Millar isn’t one to shy away from bombastic, sweeping statements. He claims to be working with a big name action director for his Superman pitch. James Cameron? Michael Bay? Oh god. Not Roland Emmerich?!
However, nothing is confirmed. But I have to say, his pitch sounds mighty intriguing. With the right director, that concept could be spectacular.
Warner Bros announced in August that they were planning to reboot the Superman franchise, and head in a darker direction – bad news for Bryan Singer, whose planned Man of Steel has since fallen by the wayside. It is unknown whether or not Brandon Routh will reprise his role as Superman.
Mark Millar’s next project will be the Matthew Vaughn directed Kick-Ass. Like Wanted, it is based on Millar’s own comic book. Keep an eye out here for updates on both Superman and Kick-Ass.

Oh I would love a superman reboot. Superman is the supreme superhero. He has the purest of character and the highest of honor. I am not familiar with Mark Millar’s work but I know he is a huge fan of Superman, and anybody could be better then whoever wrote Superman Returns it seems as though Millar is ready and willing to take the man of steel to some very original and darker places which would be fantastic. For Directing I am most familiar with Michael Bay and think he has done some great work, however I would like to see something that had more drama and a little more deep than some of his films like Transformers. Granted a Superman ticket would have to deliver on some fantastic action but I think the real trick will be great character development especially between Clark and Lois, and the gut wrenching decisions. I don’t know if Brandon Routh can deliver on that kind of a performance so there may need to be some recasting and I am not familiar with anyone who could fill out the role. Who ever will be cast, direct or write they pretty much got nowhere to go but up. I vote a huge yes for an epic trilogy and am curious as to what will happen. Good luck Warner Brothers
Like ANY film, you like to see it if it’s well done, but as we all know: ridiculous amounts of hollywood cash may give a movie an aesthetic gloss, but that NEVER compensates for sub-standard story-telling. So first: tell the story well…and the vehicle for that? Good actors that aren’t in the strangle-hold of over-direction, or, poor direction. (a la “Empire” vs Episodes 1, 2 and 3), believability (a la ‘Batman Begins’), and conveyed spontaneous emotion and humour (a la ‘Supes’ 1 and (even) 2, ‘Star Wars’, ‘Empire…rah, rah, rah… The biggest hurdle for me in a Superman story will always be the lead actor and then Lois. Chris Reeve SOOO had ‘THE’ look but also a fabulous emotional depth for the character (remembering the scene where he finds Lois in buried in her car in ‘The Movie’). Perhaps one of the keys in the proposal of another shot at this is also finding a director with OBJECTIVITY…perhaps not American, perhaps someone who has a track record of making great, emotive drama minus the sci-fi/superhero bent. “Returns” in my book was a 70% flop. Regurgitated lines from ‘The Movie’, wooden acting (even in financially crippled ‘Supes 4’ Margot, Chris and Gene Hackman still shone), WAY too much in-studio blue and green screen shooting and CGI. So for me, got a story? Got THE director? And THE actors? Then go. Otherwise, be patient 🙂
