Slumdog Millionaire – Danny Boyle’s Oscar Hope?

source: youtube.com

Slumdog Millionaire is one of the surprise critical hits of the season, with many top pundits predicting a Best Picture nomination at next year’s Oscars, as well as a possible (and long-deserved) nomination for director Danny Boyle.

The film centers around Jamal Malik, an 18-year-old who is one question away from winning 20 million rupees on India’s Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. When he is accused of cheating, Jamal tells the story of his life, and how each significant moment provided him with the answer to each of the questions.

Danny Boyle is one of the best directors working today. Although he’s best known for helming Trainspotting, his more recent offerings (Millions, 28 Days Later, Sunshine) are underrated classics.

The buzz around this film is deafening, and in an Oscar season full of faltering giants, it would be great to see a Slumdog at the festival.
