The Dark Knight: the best film of 2008, or the worst?

I realise the title of this blog doesn’t really allow for much wiggle room, but The Dark Knight is generating passionate reactions from fans and haters alike.

The website calls itself an “unofficial grassroots effort to support The Dark Knight for the 2008 Academy Awards”. It collects news articles discussing TDK’s Oscar chances, and even has its own homemade For Your Consideration advertisement.

Enjoy it here (features mild spoilers):

However, there are those that disagree with the good people at Dark Campaign (and the majority of the movie going public).

Over at, you can find a list of reasons why the $994 million grossing flick isn’t that great.

Here are some notable excerpts:

“Harvey’s Two-Face side looked like the aliens from Mars Attacks.”

“Yawwwwwn. Beginning is so boring. I can barely remember what happened in the first 40 minutes of the film. Something about Harvey Dent.”

“Why didn’t the Joker bleed when Batman was beating him up in the interrogation room?”

Accurate and insightful.

I am all for giving films fair criticism, but I didn’t really see many convincing points raised on this site. No one even mentioned the editing of the film, which is probably the biggest flaw of all (ie. what happens in Bruce Wayne’s apartment after Batman jumps out the window? He left all his guests to the Joker!?)

Overall though, I thought The Dark Knight was a stellar film, and in my opinion, deserving of a Best Picture nomination.
