WALL-E wins its first Best Picture award

WALL-E has been named Best Picture by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, increasing it’s Oscar chances significantly.

The Dark Knight was named runner up in the Best Picture category.

WALL-E’s victory is another shocking blow to former favourites The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Revolutionary Road and Frost/Nixon, who are yet to receive major recognition from any of the critic groups.

Washington DC and the National Board of Review had previously named Slumdog Millionaire their best film of the year.

Other winners include:

Best Director – Danny Boyle for Slumdog Millionaire
Best Actor – Sean Penn for Milk
Best Actress – Sally Hawkins for Happy Go Lucky
Best Supporting Actor – Heath Ledger for The Dark Knight
Best Supporting Actress – Penelope Cruz for Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Best Screenplay – Mike Leigh for Happy Go Lucky
