Surprises:
James Franco grabbing a nomination for Pineapple Express. After suffering in the Spiderman series for the better part of the decade, this talented actor has finally carved out some recognition for himself. Nice work!
Robert Downey Jr getting a nomination for Tropic Thunder was great, but we kind of saw it coming expected. But a nomination for Tom Cruise too! Hells yeah!
I was very pleased to see In Bruges and Happy Go Lucky getting a lot of recognition. Here are two great, sorely underated films (until now).
Snubs:
Milk and The Dark Knight only getting one nomination each, despite excellent showings in the critic awards.
Cate Blanchett not getting a nod for Benjamin Button! And she get’s nominated for ANYTHING!
Slumdog Millionaire star Dev Patel missing out on an acting nod. The Globes are notorious for passing over lesser known actors for big stars in the acting categories.
Television:
Over in the television categories, a bunch of newcomers dominated the Drama section while some old favourites held onto the Comedy sections.
In Treatment scored five nominations, and will compete in the Best Drama section with the amazing Mad Men (three noms), True Blood, Dexter and House (2 noms).
30 Rock and Entourage received three nominations, and are up against The Office, Californication and Weeds (two noms) in the Best Comedy category.
