Academy narrow down visual effects/makeup contenders

The Academy has whittled down the contenders for Best Visual Effects and Best Makeup to a tight seven ahead of the official nominations later this month.

The seven films competing for a Visual Effects Oscar are:

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Dark Knight
Hellboy 2: The Golden Army
Iron Man
Journey to the Center of the Earth
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

The visual effects category will be narrowed down to three nominees in the coming weeks. The Dark Knight, Hellboy 2 and Iron Man broke ground in practical effects, so I would love to see them nominated over CG fests like The Mummy. However, I’ve got to admit that Benjamin Button has some of the most spectacular special effects ever. Brad Pitt as an old manbaby? Oscar please!

The shortlist for Best Makeup includes:

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Dark Knight
Hellboy 2: The Golden Army
The Reader
Synecdoche, New York
Tropic Thunder
The Wrestler

The Dark Knight had the Joker, and Tropic Thunder had Lincoln Osiris – both worthy contenders. Once again though, Benjamin Button made Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett look every age conceivable. I’m sensing a Benji Button sweep of the technical’s.

The final nominations will be announced January 22nd.
