The Dark Knight leads Australian box office to record year

Australians spent $946 million at the box office in 2008, proving that not even a worldwide financial collapse could keep us from seeing the new Batman film.

The Joker, with only some of The Dark Knight’s grosses.

It was the highest grossing year on record thanks to some major mid-year blockbusters.

The biggest film of 2008 was The Dark Knight, which collected $45.7 million. It is the 6th highest grossing film in Australian box office history.

In a distant second comes Mamma Mia with $31.7 million. Rounding out the top five were Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Quantum of Solace and Sex and the City.

Baz Luhrmann‘s Australia fell just outside the top 5 with grosses of $26.9 million. Despite a lackluster performance in the U.S, Baz’s latest was a smash hit at home. The film has since surpassed Moulin Rouge‘s $28 million gross to become one of the most successful Australian films at the local box office.

Fun Fact:

The Dark Knight has grossed over $995 million worldwide. Yes, $49 million more than every movie released in Australia in 2008. Boom.

UnFun Fact:

Twilight grossed $297 million worldwide. It just still makes me sad is all.
