The nominees for the 29th annual Razzie awards have been announced, celebrating the very worst in cinema for 2008.

Mike Myers‘ terrible, terrible film The Love Guru earned an impressive six nominations, including Worst Picture, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Director and Screenplay. Epic Fail.

Competing against The Love Guru for Worst Picture are The Happening, The Hottie and the Nottie, In The Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale and double nominee Meet the Spartans/Disaster Movie.

In the Name of the King director and enemy of cinema Uwe Boll will receive the prestigious Worst Career Achievement. He is also a Worst Director nominee for no less than four films. Not only that, he has found himself in the Worst Couple category, alongside any actor, camera or screenplay in his films.

“I can’t believe what’s … ‘happening’.”

“I know, who could imagine what is … ‘happening.”

I personally feel The Happening doesn’t belong in the Worst Picture category, not because it wasn’t awful (because it really was), but because it was so damn entertaining. Quite reasonably however, Mark Wahlberg has grabbed two Worst Actor nominations for both The Happening and Max Payne.

Other notable nominees include the entire cast of The Women for Worst Actress, Meet Dave stars Eddie Murphy and Eddie Murphy for Worst Screen Couple, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull for Worst Prequel, Remake, Ripoff or Sequel.

However, despite the hilarious awfulness of all these films (with the exception of Meet Dave which I am just a little fond of), the deserving ‘winners’ of all these prizes are surely Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, the two worst directors in the history of cinema. Imagine Uwe Boll times ten, and that accounts for just one of these clowns. Meet the Spartans and Disaster Movie will go alongside the Zapruder footage and Triumph of the Will as the worst moments in human history.
