Slumdog and Heath edge closer to Oscars after SAG win

The winners of the Screen Actors Guild and Producers Guild Awards were announced over the weekend, providing further indicators of which films will walk away with Oscar gold next month.

Slumdog Millionaire picked up Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the SAG’s, an award that has called the Academy’s Best Picture winner six times in the last decade. The film also won Best Motion Picture at the PGA’s, which has been consistent with Best Picture only four times in the last eight years. As you can see, a Slumdog victory at Hollywood’s night of nights is still not set in stone.

Back at the SAG’s, Heath Ledger received a posthumous award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for his work in The Dark Knight. His co-star Gary Oldman collected the award on his behalf. The Dark Knight also won Outstanding Stunt Ensemble.

Meryl Streep was named Outstanding Actress for her work in Doubt, while Sean Penn pipped his closest competitor Mickey Rourke to be named Outstanding Actor for Milk.

Kate Winslet continued her awards-show steamrolling by winning Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for The Reader. Interestingly, she has been nominated in the Best Actress category for this performance at the Oscars. Good news for her former Supporting Actress nominees; bad news for Meryl Streep.

In the television category, Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey once again were named Outstanding Actor and Actress in Television Comedy. Their show 30 Rock also picked up Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy.

Mad Men won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama. Hugh Laurie won Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Drama for House, and Sally Field won the dramatic award for women for her work in Brothers and Sisters.
