Will The Expendables be the greatest film ever made?

If you haven’t heard about Sylvester Stallone‘s upcoming project The Expendables, you are in for a treat. Sly has lined up one of the most badass casts in the history of film badassery. He has also enlisted the talents of one of the best and most underrated action directors currently working – himself.

The Expendables will tell the story of an “expendable” team who are sent to overthrow a ruthless South American dictator. But that’s not important. What’s really impressive is who will make up this ragtag team of violent mercenaries.

Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Forest Whitaker, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture and Eric Roberts (replacing Ben Kingsley). Danny Trejo (ie. the craziest looking actor in history) will play a villain.

Can you believe this cast?! It’s incredible. I mean, it’s not so amazing that these guys were all available (I doubt Roberts and Lundgren are really fending off the movie deals). What’s so amazing is that no one thought of sticking all these straight-to-video action legends in the one film! Well, I suppose Sly, Statham, Whitaker and Li have some draw for cinema goers; but don’t forget – it wasn’t so long ago that Rourke was sitting untouched on video store shelves.

Either way, combining all these guys into the one project is ingenious. Of course, I’m a little saddened that Jean Claude Van Damme turned down a role (and even sadder that Steven Seagal wasn’t even offered one). AICN has also spilled a rumour that involves The Governator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, having a small cameo in the film as himself. I FORGIVE YOU EXPENDABLES! YESS!!!!!

Sly is currently putting the final touches on the script, and is reportedly trying to get the right mix of humour, action and reality. You may laugh, but Stallone is an Oscar-nominated screenwriter. How awkward for you!

I am a big fan of Stallone’s last two films, Rocky Balboa and Rambo, the latter being one of the most underrated action films of the past few years. He really knows how to pace an exciting action sequence, which is a talent that too often goes unrecognised by audiences.

With principal photography set to begin next month in Costa Rica, and a release date set in 2010, you’re going to hear a lot more about The Expendables.

So get excited …. NOW!

Question: Who are you most excited to see in this film? Personally, I can’t wait to see Dolph Lundgren trying to keep up with the other actors. Please, please, please team him up with Forest Whitaker for a bunch of scenes!
