Mendes goes all Juno with Away We Go

Oscar winning director Sam Mendes has turned away from his usual morbid-award-baity flicks to make the comedy Away We Go. The trailer has debuted online, and I’m getting a heavy Juno/Little Miss Sunshine kind of vibe. And thank God, because I don’t think I could have dealt with another Revolutionary Road.

Written by indie icon Dave Eggers (who also co-wrote the screenplay for Where The Wild Things Are) and his wife Vendela Vida, the film stars John Krasinski (The Office) and Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live) as expectant parents. They go on a road trip to find the perfect home to raise their child. Expectedly, they run into a whole bunch of kooky characters. Throw in some hand-drawn animation, an acoustic-folk song, and Maggie Gyllenhaal, and you’ve got the archetypal indie trailer.

I’m a big fan of Krasinski, Rudolph, Eggers and pre-Rev Road Mendes, so I’ve got high hopes for this project. I only hope it doesn’t fall victim to the ‘indie-comedy-vacuum’, and get sucked inside a vortex of irony and strained subtlety. I’ve been hurt before.

Away We Go does not yet have an Australian release date.
