Check out Russell Crowe as Robin Hood!

Universal has released the first picture of Russell Crowe as Robin Hood in Ridley Scott‘s long-delayed medieval epic.

Crowe has chopped off his flowing locks and dropped some weight for the role, returning to his former physique after piling on the pounds for his past two films, Body of Lies and State of Play.

In an interview with USA Today, producer Brian Grazer has described Crowe’s look as closer to Gladiator than any version of Robin Hood we’ve seen before.

“He doesn’t have the old Robin Hood tights … He’s got armor. He’s very medieval,” he said.

The film will show the origin tale of Robin Hood, depicting his formation of the Merry Men and his courtship of Maid Marion.

Cate Blanchett has been cast as Marion, alongside Vanessa Redgrave as Queen Eleanor, Kevin Durand as Little John and the brilliant Mark Strong as the villainous Sir Godfrey.

Crowe was originally slated to play both Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham (which were still not quite sure about the logistics of. Were they going to be the same person? Or was Crowe going to play two separate characters, Norbit-style?).

Now it seems as though Scott’s film might not even feature the Sheriff in a major role. The role is yet to be cast.

Robin Hood has a tentative release date of May 10, 2010.
