Is District 9 the next Cloverfield?

The teaser trailer for the highly secretive Peter Jackson-produced thriller District 9 has officially debuted online.

I’m not going to lie to you – this is a strange one. District 9 is a documentary-style examination of illegal aliens in Africa. And when I say aliens, I mean aliens. Check it out, and let us know what you think.

The film is directed by South African Neill Blomkamp, who gained notoriety for being touted as the likely director of the long-gestating Halo film. His latest feature is based on his short film Alive in Joberg, which you can watch below.

I think the premise of District 9 is ingenious, and reminds me a lot of Max Brook’s book World War Z, which is a “factual” account of a Zombie invasion. Director Marc Forster has (very unwisely) been signed to bring World War Z to cinemas next year.

As much as I loved Cloverfield, I didn’t know whether there would be much steam left in the whole “realistically filmed invasion/horror film” genre. However, it looks like District 9 is playing with some interesting variations on that riff, and will definitely be one of the more intriguing pictures of the year.

District 9 opens October 15, 2009.

What are your thoughts on this trailer? Are you a fan of Cloverfield/Quarantine?
