You don’t sneeze at an $87 million opening weekend and you certainly don’t sneeze at the possibility of THREE $87 million opening weekends.

Hugh Jackman has announced that he and producing-partner John Palermo are working on a sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Jackman will return to star as Logan/Wolverine; the role that made him a household name.

X-Men fans will also be happy to hear that a spin-off featuring Deadpool has officially been announced. Ryan Reynolds briefly appeared as Wade Wilson in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and is expected to return in the spin-off as Wilson/Deadpool.

Despite tepid reviews, the latest installment of the X-Men franchise has already taken a whopping $163 million worldwide. The film collected an impressive $7.9 million in Australia on its opening weekend.

Jackman told MTV that he has been speaking to writers about basing the Wolverine sequel around Logan’s Japanese adventure. (WOLVERINE SPOILER ALERT) After some prints of Wolverine, a short clip showed Logan in a Japanese Bar. (SPOILER ALERT ENDED)

“I love the idea of this kind of anarchic character, the outsider, being in this world,” he said. “I can see it aesthetically, too — full of honor and tradition and customs and someone who’s really anti-all of that, and trying to negotiate his way. The idea of the samurai, too — and the tradition there. It’s really great. In the comic book he gets his ass kicked by a couple of samurai — not even mutants. He’s shocked by that at first.”

Earlier this year, a rumour circled the internet about Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire screenwriter Simon Beaufoy being approached by Wolverine producers to pen a potential sequel. No formal offer was officially made, and Beaufoy himself has stated he is not involved with the project.

What did you think about X-Men Origins: Wolverine? Are you looking forward to a sequel? How do you feel about the handling of Wilson/Deadpool in Wolverine? Any thoughts, share them below!
