Soderbergh teams up with porn star Sasha Grey

Well, it was bound to happen sometime. Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh has enlisted the talents of porn star Sasha Grey to star in his latest film The Girlfriend Experience. This caps off a decade of increasingly alienating indie projects from the director of Traffic.

Now, this isn’t exactly breaking news. In fact, TGE opened in the U.S. last week to fairly impressive reviews. However, when we first heard the news about Soderbergh’s latest project, we didn’t realise that Grey was such a significant pop cultural icon (well, that’s the party line, and we’re sticking to it).

She’s been interviewed by a number of publications (including Rolling Stone magazine) and has been dropping the names of her inspirational figures, including Jean Luc Godard and David Bowie. Not bad for the star of Face Invaders 4 and Hairy Movie.

In TGE, Grey plays an escort who provides her clients with the full ‘girlfriend experience’, despite already having a full-time boyfriend of her own. Check it out:

Now, there is no Australian release date for The Girlfriend Experience yet. Considering we haven’t even got Che yet, it’s not looking like it will be anytime soon. If I were a betting man, I’d say we can expect The Girlfriend Experience to hit DVD when Soderbergh’s The Informant hits cinemas October 22nd.
