Nicolas Cage stars in ‘world’s greatest trailer’ for Bad Lieutenant

The trailer for Werner Herzog‘s “re-imagining” of Abel Ferrara‘s classic cult flick Bad Lieutenant has hit the web in a flurry of inexplicable one-liners and bizarre facial expressions from its star Nicolas Cage.

Yeah, like that one. Laboriously titled Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, the film is not a remake of the 1992-Harvey Keitel feature (in which Kietel played a “Bad Lieutenant”). Cage is playing a different character than Keitel’s, although from the looks of the trailer, he seems to share the same penchant for crack pipes and public sex.

Look, I’m going to need y’all to watch this to understand how, just, I mean …. look just watch it.

WARNING: The following Red Band trailer features drug use, coarse language, violence, and some sex.

OK, you made it. What in the world is going on in this trailer? At only 2mins and 33seconds, this clip seemingly features more WTF moments per second than Eraserhead.

I mean, look at some of these lines from Nic Cage’s character.

“It’s my lucky crack pipe. You don’t have a lucky crack pipe?”

“Shoot him again. His soul is still dancing.”

“What are these f****** iguanas doing on my coffee table?”

Weird, right? Remember, that doesn’t even take into account Cage’s bizarre delivery.

Of course, along with the awesomeness of the trailer, we have the equally fantastic feud between Ferrara and Herzog that began last year, when the original flick’s director announced at Cannes 2008 that he hoped Cage and Herzog “die in Hell. I hope they’re all in the same streetcar, and it blows up.” Herzog stoked the fires of Ferrara’s anger by saying “I’ve never seen a film by him. I have no idea who he is. Is he Italian? Is he French? Who is he?”

The original Bad Lieutenant is a devastating and uncompromisingly bleak tour into the soul of one of cinema’s most complex characters. Here it looks like Werner Herzog is playing up the premise for yucks. (By the way, this trailer is bizarre enough without the knowledge that it comes from Herzog, of all directors.)

Maybe this thing is actually meant to be a really, really black comedy. I mean, would a serious movie have such hilarious screengrabs as this:

or this:

That’s a low blow. But it’s so hard these days to be a Nicolas Cage-apologist. Sure, he was brilliant in Adaptation, Moonstruck and Leaving Las Vegas. But he keeps turning out interminable dross, one flick after another. And hey, this comes from someone who loved Knowing!

Regardless, I CANNOT WAIT to see Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. It hits cinemas in December. Sadly, only in Belgium, France and Argentina. That’s a good sign.

Discuss: Favourite Nic Cage quote? In my opinion, “put the bunny back in the box” is hard to top.

  1. I'll have to see this if only to determine whether they could make this film worse than the original.

  2. Only saw the first 15 minutes of the first one before the eject button was hit. This one looks like hoot – I'll be watching!
