Go Scorcese-crazy for the Shutter Island trailer!

The trailer for Martin Scorcese‘s upcoming thriller Shutter Island has debuted, and it looks as if we have another Best Picture contender on our hands.

Set in the summer of 1954; two U.S. Marshals (played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo) travel to the Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane on Shutter Island to investigate the whereabouts of an escaped, murderous patient. However, things aren’t as they seem on Shutter Island; a hidden secret threatens to spin out of control, and the marshals begin to realise they may never actually leave the island.

The trailer looks absolutely phenomenal, and kind of scary too, which is new for Scorcese (although his last film did feature the walking dead). Can Scorcese make Shutter Island the first thriller since The Silence of the Lambs to take home the top Oscar prize? Check out the trailer and speculate like crazy in the comments section below!

This film marks the 4th collaboration between director Scorcese and star DiCaprio, and it has been one of the most interesting and exciting cinematic relationships of the past decade. In your face, Nolan/Bale! Martyardo’s previous films include the flawed yet entertaining Gangs of New York, the brilliant, Oscar-winning crime-saga The Departed, and the criminally underrated The Aviator. From the looks of this trailer, they’re going four for four.

Shutter Island is based on the novel by Dennis Lehane. His previous works, Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone, were adapted for the screen pretty damn successfully if you ask me. His words in the hands of Martin Scorcese? I’d say it could be a masterpiece.

The film also stars (and get ready for this cast, ok?) Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams, Jackie Earle Haley, Emily Mortimer, Max Von Sydow, Patricia Clarkson and John Carrol Lynch. Nice.

As you may have noticed, I’m excited. The film will hit Australian cinemas October 1st, 2009.

Discuss: Scorcese and Dicaprio, or Scorcese and DeNiro? The Aviator vs. The King of Comedy. Decide!

  1. Wow, looks pretty bloody good. 2009hopefully looking like a good year for films.

  2. this film looks excellent, especially compared to the usual tripe in the genre — with a fine crew and a fair cast, this could really be brilliant!must say, I think the typeface used for the titles is inappropriate and pretty unimaginative.
