The Wog Boy 2 is coming. No, seriously.

I can safely say that when I began blogging for Quickflix, I never expected to report this news item. Paramount Pictures has announced a sequel to the 1999 hit Australian film The Wog Boy is going into production.

Titled Wogboy 2: The King of Mykonos, the picture will reunite stars Nick Giannopoulos and Vince Colosimo. Co-written by Giannopoulos, the film will commence filming this September in both Melbourne and Mykonos (which is in Greece, obviously), and is expected to hit cinemas in 2010.

So, OK, this actually makes a lot of sense. The original flick grossed a massive $13.4 million at home, which is a tremendous take for an Aussie film. To put that in perspective, Star Trek has made just over $12 million in Australia. Meanwhile, 2009’s most successful Australian film, Samson and Delilah, has just crossed the $2 mil mark.

Regardless of your feelings towards Giannopoulos’ brand of humour, it’s kind of nice to see a major Australian film go into production. It will be funded by Screen Australia, who are also putting money into Stuart Beattie’s adaptation of Tomorrow When The War Began. Maybe we’ll begin to see some bigger and better Aussie films hitting cinemas.

Discuss: How long until Clare Werbeloff is cast in Wogboy 2. I’m not kidding. Surely it’s inevitable. God she annoys me.
