No bull! The Invention of Lying trailer debuts!

The long-awaited trailer for Ricky Gervais‘ cinematic directorial debut The Invention of Lying has landed online, featuring a smorgasbord of great comic actors.

The film is a comic-fantasy (boy, Gervais loves those doesn’t he) about a parallel universe in which everyone always tells the truth. When a loser (Gervais) discovers the ability to make things up that aren’t true (read: lie) his life takes a turn for the better.

The flick also stars Jennifer Garner, Rob Lowe, Louis C.K, Tina Fey, Jeffrey Tambor, Jonah Hill, Jason Bateman, Martin Starr and Christopher Guest.

Gervais revealed on his blog that he screened the flick for Star Trek director J.J. Abrams. His verdict:

Ricky Gervais proves, once again, that he is the master. Not only of comedy, but social commentary. ‘The Invention of Lying’ is as funny as it is biting, wholly original, and surprisingly moving. Is there such thing as an important comedy? Turns out there is, and this is it. If you’re still reading this, you should stop immediately and go see ‘The Invention of Lying!'”

Well thanks Abrams, but we’re not all buddy-buddy with Gervais like you. We can’t just ask him to come to our house and screen it for us. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think.

So, too cutesy? I don’t think so. Although that trailer narration kills me. Can someone please come up with a better line than “This (insert season), (character name) will discover (something inane about life)”.

The Invention of Lying is co-directed by Gervais and newcomer Matthew Robinson. Longtime Gervais collaborator (The Office and Extras co-writer/director) Stephen Merchant is not involved with the project.

But fear not; he and Ricky are currently directing their first feature film screenplay entitled Cemetery Junction. The film focuses on three young men who work at an insurance agency in the 1970’s. Neither Gervais nor Merchant will have leading roles in the film. Take a look at them all directorial and stuff.

Also, if you are a fan of The Ricky Gervais Show audiobooks, you might be interested to know that it is being turned into an animated show for HBO. Yep, next year you can enjoy the round-headed antics of Karl Pilkington and Monkey News in cartoon form!

But back to TIOL. It opens in Australia November 26th. Start counting down!

Discuss: Favourite David Brent quote? If I may: (When describing his dancing style) “Just some Flashdance mixed with MC Hammer s***.”
