Head to Head – Step Brothers

Welcome to the latest installment of Head to Head, in which our Quickflix critics enter into a relentlessly bloody battle to the death based on the merits of a particular film. This week, our critics get into an epic noogie over Adam McKay’s manchild saga Step Brothers.

Simon Miraudo will argue FOR the film DVDman will argue AGAINST it. Let us know in the comments who you agree with. Let the bloodshed begin!

Alright, so maybe 4 out of 5 is a pretty generous mark for a film that features Will Ferrell’s testicles so prominently. But that’s half the charm of such an anarchic, virtually nonsensical celebration of manchildhood. Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s chemistry is insanely watchable, and there’s nothing quite like seeing them run rampage like cartoon hurricanes through the lives of their embattled parents, potential employers and unlikely love interests. It’s a slapdash collection of sketches, but the laughs are frequent. And it has a freakin’ score by Jon Brion! Have you no decency DVDman?

DVDman – 2/5

It’s a shame that the pairing of Ferrell and Reilly sank from such great heights to such sad depths. I find both these actors eminently watchable… until now. If I want to watch adults acting like semi-retarded children, I can just watch Play School with my little girl, and probably end up a bit smarter than I would have if I just watched Step Brothers. In what looks like a movie made up of ad-libs by two man-children on too much red cordial, I reckon I saw flickers of shame cross the actors faces as they occasionally remembered who they were and what they were doing. Let’s hope we haven’t seen the best of these two (mostly) fantastic actors.

Now it’s over to you! Who do you agree with? Do you think like Simon, and believe that Step Brothers is an anarchic pleasure? Or do you side with DVDman, and think it’s a waste of time and talent? Let us know! Choose your side! There can only be one winner!

  1. I was really disappointed by this film. I expected much more from two talented actors, especially Will Ferrell, surely one of the finest comic actors going around.Unfortunately it was juvenile in the extreme, to the point that I actually cringed more than once, and not in testicle-sympathy.

  2. I enjoyed the film quite a bit, yet I was extremely disappointed…Perhaps it's my own fault for such high expectations?Still… I enjoyed the film! I'm going with Simon.

  3. I'm so disappointed that these two fine comedic actors didn't run screaming when they read this script – although everyone has to eat…The film might be funny to males, say 13 – 16 but everyone else will find it puerile and irritating.Only redeeming features are – wait – none!
