Natalie Portman cast in Thor

The lovely Natalie Portman has been cast in the upcoming superhero flick Thor alongside former Home and Away star Chris Hemsworth.

Portman will star as Jane Foster, a modern-day nurse who steals the heart of the fallen Norse God Thor.

As previously reported, Hemsworth will star in the title role. The flick will be directed by Kenneth Branagh.

I’m going to go ahead and steal the official plot synopsis from Marvel, because I’m ashamed to say I’m not too familiar with Thor’s back-story.

Marvel Studios expands its film universe with a new type of super hero: “Thor.” This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

Thor is expected to begin production next year for a May 20, 2011 release date. It will follow other Marvel releases Iron Man 2 on May 7, 2010 and The First Avenger: Captain America on July 22, 2010. Thor will precede the highly anticipated team-up film The Avengers on May 4th, 2012.

Discuss: So we’re all excited for Iron Man 2 and The Avengers, but is anyone really looking forward to Thor? I trust Branagh, and would watch anything with Natalie, but I’m still not feeling it. Thoughts?
