Head to Head – Australia

Welcome to the first edition of our newly revamped Head to Head feature, in which our Quickflix critics take on our readers in a rip-snorting battle to the death! You pick the film, and we pick the fight!

This week we received a stunning attack on Baz Luhrmann’s epic film Australia by Mr. Chris Pudney. For his troubles, he received 2 tickets to Red Cliff. If you would also like to win free movie tickets, send your controversial mini-reviews to us here!

Chris Pudney will argue AGAINST the film, while Quickflix critic Simon Miraudo will argue FOR it. Let us know in the comments section below who you agree with. Spare no vitriol! Choose your side! There can only be one winner!

Chris Pudney – 1/5

Dreadful. Overacted, florid, saccharine rubbish. If you think Steve Irwin’s “Crikey!” is tedious, imagine hearing it uttered every few minutes by Kidman and Jackman. It’s not satirical, it’s not a caricature – it’s idiotic. The film’s only redeeming feature is the cinematography and landscape but even the latter was unnecessarily digitally “enhanced”. Luhrmann, Kidman and Jackman should have their Australian citizenships revoked for this offensive tripe.

Luhrmann’s Australia is a Technicolor wonder; an intentionally shiny version of our nation’s history that is as fun as it is beautiful to behold. Sure, it’s not exactly The Proposition. But it doesn’t intend to be. The film’s madcap first 30 minutes should testify to that. Although the second half cannot meet the lofty heights of thrilling cattle drive, the film’s whole is a significant achievement. Jackman is always a likeable lead, and Kidman … well, let’s just say that Jackman is a very likable lead. I don’t want to say that not-liking Australia is un-Australian – but not liking Jackman certainly is!

Now it’s over to you! Do you agree with Chris or Simon? Let us know in the comments section below. And if you would like to be featured in the next Head to Head, and possibly win some free movie tickets, send your mini-reviews to us here at Quickflix!

  1. Australia…what a waste of film! the only good parts in it were acted by the Aboriginal actors (as usual) and the beautiful landscape made up for the purile script and ridiculous outfits of Nicole Kidman (she is a beautiful lady…surely they could have done better in wardrobe! Isn't Baz's wife in charge of that department?)Someone should have given Baz a heads-up BEFORE the film hit the cinema..he did such a great job on his previous movies…surely he can't have thought that this silly storyline would satisfy us tough Aussie critics?! Bad Job Baz…Bad Job.
