Is Spielberg bringing Halo to the big screen?

Halo fans rejoice! Steven Spielberg is trying to make that feature film adaptation you’ve been dreaming of.

IESB are reporting that Spielberg is in active negotiations to develop a feature film based on the highly successful video game.

According to the report, the legendary director has fallen in love with Aussie Stuart Beattie’s script, entitled Halo: The Fall of Reach. It is based on Eric Nyland’s prequel novel to the game.

Latino Review reviewed Beattie’s script back in April, detailing the basic plot:

“The script is, first and foremost, a character-driven story about a soldier named John who was kidnapped or “conscripted” by the UNSC when he was just six years old, and then brutally trained to become an elite Spartan warrior known as Master Chief 117.

“The script then takes us through the horrific first contact with the Covenant hordes on the doomed colony world of Harvest, and then climaxes with the spectacular fall of the UNSC forward base on Reach, during which every other Spartan is slaughtered.

Beattie has also outlined a potential second film entitled Rise of the Flood and a third film entitled Battle for Earth.

Spielberg has a strong relationship with Microsoft, who holds all the rights to Halo. Adding further credibility to this story, it is known that Spielberg’s studio DreamWorks is looking for their very own tentpole franchise after splitting from Paramount and losing Transformers in the process.

Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp were previously slated to produce and direct a Halo film for 20th Century Fox. However, the project fell apart just before production was set to begin. The duo went on to develop District 9 instead.

Spielberg is more likely to produce the film rather than direct, as he already has a few major projects on the go.

Beattie previously wrote the screenplays for Collateral (yay!) and GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra (boo!) and is about to direct an adaptation of the classic post-apocalyptic novel Tomorrow When The War Began. Perhaps that film will end up being an audition for the potential Halo-helmer.

Of course, no official statements from Spielberg, Beattie or Microsoft here. We’ll be sure to keep you updated.

Discuss: I’m not very familiar with Halo, so how does this news sound to you fans?

One Response to “Is Spielberg bringing Halo to the big screen?”

  1. Game to cinema adaptations have been very hit and miss in recent years, and with all the hype coming out about the Warcraft Movie, I have no doubt that the Master Chief will be on the big screen to give us a battle of the game franchises. At least with the likes of Spielberg behind it, and a quiet certainty the Microsoft won't hand over their baby to just anyone, we may actually get a gritty Halo flick to please the fan base. I'm curious to see who'd they'd cast as the Chief?
