Are Sony developing Spiderman 5 and 6?

So much for wrapping up the franchise. Sony have hired Zodiac-scribe James Vanderbilt to pen Spiderman 5 and 6.

Vanderbilt was originally hired to write the screenplay for Spiderman 4. However, his intention to develop a two-part storyline that would stretch between movies 4 and 5 was not met favourably by series director Sam Raimi and the cast.

The Spiderman 4 screenplay was then rewritten by playwright David Linsday-Abaire and gun-for-hire Gary Ross.

Sony is prepping Spiderman 4 for an early 2010 shoot and a May 2011 release. Raimi and stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst have all signed on for Spidey 4. However, if they do not agree to work on Vanderbilt’s two-parter, it will likely become the first two installments of a series reboot.

It’s hard to know what to feel right now. I’m sure we’ll know a lot more after filming has finished on Spiderman 4. After all, isn’t Raimi supposed to work on that World of Warcraft movie?

Discuss: This whole Spiderman sequel business is getting messy. Good news for the franchise?

  1. I'm waiting for spider man5 and spider man 6… may be its interesting..

  2. I think it would have been better if spider man 4 had been split into two movies. It felt really crammed.

  3. Just in case you forgot, Spidey 3 had Parker walking down the street winking at girls like he was awesome. The playwright involvement in Spidey 4-and-5 scripts is sure to add even more of that golden pinache. Nothing similar to Spidey 3 could be worth paying $20 (twice) for. I'd hope for a fresh take, but isn't there a chance Spiderman has been milked for all it's worth? Let it go, Hollywood… just let it go.
