Rambo returns for The Savage Hunt!

Everyone’s favourite elderly action hero Sylvester Stallone will once again don the bandanna to portray invincible Vietnam-vet John Rambo.

Nu Image/Millennium Films have officially greenlit a fifth Rambo film, with Stallone signing on to star, write and direct.

The above poster is a (very-rough) promotion one-sheet slapped together for the Toronto International Film Festival. Hmm, looks like a dodgy Photoshop job to me.

Variety had claimed that the film, titled Rambo V: The Savage Hunt, would focus on Rambo’s quest to rescue a girl kidnapped by human traffickers. However, Stallone himself contacted AICN and informed them of the film’s true plot.

Apparently, the film is about a U.S. Military installation that is experimenting on elite soldiers by tapping into the deeply embedded savagery of human-kind. When these “perfect killers” escape captivity, Rambo and a Black Ops team are brought in to bring them down.

So, Rambo with a sci-fi bent. I can go along with this.

The character of Rambo first appeared in 1982’s First Blood, and was resurrected for First Blood: Part 2, Rambo 3 and once again in 2007 for the succinctly titled Rambo.

The fourth Rambo flick was the first directed by Sly and grossed an impressive $113 million worldwide. The film also received fairly good reviews, mostly thanks to Stallone’s impressive directorial chops. In this writer’s opinion, Stallone is one of the best action director’s working today.

Sly is currently deep into post-production on his action-ensemble blockbuster The Expendables, which is slated for release in Australia April 15, 2010. Rambo V: The Savage Hunt will begin shooting later this year.

Discuss: OK, I’m a big fan of First Blood AND Rambo, even though they feel as if they come from two completely different franchises. Therefore, I’m pumped for another Rambo flick. But how do you feel? Is Stallone’s time in the spotlight up?
