Is Paranormal Activity the next Blair Witch?

have pointed us in the direction of one of the more exciting indie horror films still waiting for a cinematic release: Paranormal Activity. It looks like a delicious blend of The Blair Witch Project and the mumblecore movement, and personally I cannot wait to see it.

The film was directed by video-game developer Oren Pell in his own home. Newcomers Katie Featherstone and Micah Sloat star as a couple who suspect their house is haunted and set up a tripod and camera to record the suspicious goings-on while they sleep. Obviously, things get weird.

Take a look at the trailer below. It’s a unique one; featuring the audience’s reactions to the film’s various terrifying moments. Trust us and watch it with the lights on.

Paramount Pictures purchased the film back in January 2008 after it debuted to rave reviews at the Slamdance Film Festival.

The Paramount/DreamWorks deal originally stated that Pell would be given a bigger budget to remake the film, with the $11,000 original set to feature on the DVD.

However, an early screen test of the low-budget flick revealed that people loved the original just as it was. Eighteen months later, we are now finally seeing it head to cinemas.

The LA Times have a great write up about the film’s history, including a great little anecdote about Steven Spielberg‘s experience with the film:

“As the story goes, Spielberg had taken a “Paranormal Activity” DVD to his Pacific Palisades estate, and not long after he watched it, the door to his empty bedroom inexplicably locked from the inside, forcing him to summon a locksmith … he brought the movie back to DreamWorks in a garbage bag, colleagues say.”

No Australian release date yet, but hopefully the film will get a following in the U.S and then we’ll see it brought over to our shores.

UPDATE: (22/09/09) Icon Films will distribute Paranormal Activity in Australia. It will be released December 3, 2009!

Discuss: Are we getting tired of these “found-movie” horror films, or does Paranormal Activity seem right up your alley?

  1. I love a good horror, to me, watching the trailer, the audience looks to be acting (and not very well at that).I will be interested to watch the movie and hopefully it is as scary as they say.

  2. I have seen it and let me tell you, it really lives up to what it was said and written about it. Bloody scary indeed! It is so cleverly done, making you think you're watching some sort of reality TV show, like footage from the BB house, not a movie. Even writing this and thinking about it, gives me goose bumps. I should have started by mentioning that I'm not a big fan of horror/gory movies, I really find them somewhat sill, but this is simply … Brilliant!

  3. just watched the film in an advance screning…after seing many scary films I do not get easily scared but this film scared the crap out of me..I still have to tell myself that is only a movie and not real…but let me tell you some scenes will stay with you long after you have watched the film… excellent film

  4. Just watched the movie and it would have to be one of the most boring 96 minutes that I have sat through…….really slow going and not in the least bit scary.. in fact the main male character in it comes across as a total "dick"
