The story of an obese, sexually abused and pregnant teenage girl has cemented its position as an Oscar contender after claiming the top prize at the Toronto International Film Festival. Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire was given the Audience Award following a critically acclaimed festival fun.

The Lee Daniels’ directed picture also claimed a prize at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Media heavyweights Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry became executive producers after seeing the film at Sundance and will likely push for Academy Award consideration when the film hits cinemas later this year.

Precious does not yet have an Australian release date, but you can check out the trailer below.

It is important to note that no one had even heard of Slumdog Millionaire, let alone considered it an Oscar contender, until it won the same prize at Toronto last year. Consider the race for Precious to take Best Picture ON!

In other news, Bruce Beresford‘s highly anticipated film Mao’s Last Dancer was named first runner up.

Discuss: Based on the trailer, do you think Precious has what it takes to make it to the Oscars?
