Welcome to the latest edition of Head to Head, in which our Quickflix critic takes on our readers in a rip-snorting battle to the death! You pick the film, and we pick the fight!

Align CenterThis week we received a universe-shattering attack on the Will Ferrell ‘family’ comedy Land of the Lost from Doug Bowie. For his troubles, he received a free pass to the upcoming remake of Fame. If you would also like to win free movie tickets, send your controversial mini-reviews to us here!

Doug Bowie will argue AGAINST the film, while Quickflix critic Simon Miraudo will argue FOR it. Let us know in the comments section below who you agree with. Spare no vitriol! Choose your side! There can only be one winner!

Doug Bowie – 1/5

This was a terrible film and one I was truly embarrassed and ashamed to have taken my kids to! How did it get a PG rating in Australia, when it is so gross and they swear lots! It starts out with Will Ferrell, a paleontologist who has invented a machine to go back in time. He’s crude and rude, and figuring out the spot to go where the machine will take them back in time, goes there and does go back to the dinosaur age with his assistant (the highlight of the movie) and a tour guide. The dinosaurs and special effects are good, but Will Ferrell is so revolting, you actually want the dinosaur to eat him.

Simon Miraudo – 3.5/5

Doug, you may be surprised to know that you and I actually agree on something. As I stated in my review of the film, I was shocked that Land of the Lost got away with a PG rating. It had coarse language, quite a few sexual references and even some drug use. I’m sorry you took your kids to see it, because it is not an appropriate kid’s film. Saying that, it is an incredibly appropriate film for a 21-going-on-15-year-old boy like myself. LOTL plays less like an adventure film and more like an acid-trip; a fever dream featuring giant dinosaurs, sleestaks and talking chimps. Sure, the film doesn’t quite know what it wants to be (kids film/stoner movie etc.). But a $100 milllion ‘children’s movie’ packed full of sex jokes and drugs? You’ve got to appreciate anarchy like that.

BONUS NOTE: Don’t worry Doug, you are not alone. Land of the Lost is the most complained about movie of the year so far.

Now it’s over to you! Do you agree with Doug or Simon? Let us know in the comments section below. And if you would like to be featured in the next Head to Head, and possibly win some free movie tickets, send your mini-reviews to us here at Quickflix!

  1. I recently watched the original series of LOTL, and to watch Wil Ferrell slash and burn his way through the decency and real science fiction of the original was sad to see. I have to say that when I heard that Wil Ferrell was in the movie my expectations lowered significantly. Yes, the effects were good, the heroine was pretty, and you got to see more than three Sleestak in a scene at a time (in the original there were only three actors playing Sleestak – basketball players actually), but Wil Ferrell made it a Wil Ferrell vehicle so overall it was disappointing. It could have been a much better movie.

  2. Are you really 21, Simon?

  3. I wouldn't lie. Ask my mum!
