Baumbach and Stiller team up for Greenberg

The trailer for Noah Baumbach‘s latest film Greenberg has landed online. It looks like another uncomfortably offbeat dramedy from the Academy Award-nominated filmmaker.

Greenberg (Ben Stiller) is experiencing something of a mid-life crisis. He decides to house sit his brother’s home, where he meets an aspiring singer (Mumblecore maven Greta Gerwig). The two of them slowly enter into an uncertain courtship.

The film also stars Rhys Ifans and Mrs. Baumbach herself, Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Check out the trailer below and let us know your thoughts!

Baumbach is best known for directing the coming-of-age drama The Squid and The Whale, for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. He followed it up with 2007’s Margot at the Wedding.

He has also worked with Wes Anderson several times, co-writing the screenplays for The Life Aquatic and Fantastic Mr. Fox.

It’s quite exciting to see Ben Stiller work on a film with a more serious tone. It’s important to remember that he used to do these kinds of films all the time (Reality Bites, Flirting With Disaster). Although I love him in silly roles (Tropic Thunder and Zoolander), it will be nice to see him flex his dramatic chops once again.

Stiller isn’t the first comic actor Baumbach has cast in a more serious role. Jeff Daniels and Jack Black both took on darker roles in The Squid and the Whale and Margot at the Wedding respectively.

Greenberg will hit American cinemas March 2010, with an Australian release to (hopefully) follow. (UPDATE!) Universal will distribute the film May 27th in Australia.

James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem wrote new material for the film’s soundtrack.

Discuss: I’m not a big fan of Margot at the Wedding or The Life Aquatic, but I think Baumbach showed enough promise in The Squid and The Whale to deserve our attention with his future projects. How do you feel about Baumbach’s work?
