The Hangover for Best Picture?

source: awardsdaily.com

Warner Bros purchased a full page advertisement on the front cover of Monday’s Variety to push box office behemoth The Hangover for Best Picture consideration. Wait. WHAT?!

This FYC ad is directed at the Golden Globes, specifically by asking for a nomination in the Best Picture (Comedy or Musical) category.

However, what with the Academy Award Best Picture category expanding to ten nominees, I have heard plenty of online buzz tipping The Hangover to score one of the ten top slots.

I suppose this has to do with the belief that the extra nominations will allow more room for smaller indie films and crowd-pleasing blockbusters. The Hangover grossed $459 million worldwide, meaning it falls in the latter category.

But seriously? The Hangover for Best Picture at the Oscars? I don’t think there is a chance. I don’t even think it was the funniest movie of the year. Don’t get me wrong, I really liked it. But if the Academy is going to nominate a gross-out comedy for Best Picture, surely they should just wait until Judd Apatow makes another film on the level of Knocked Up.

But hey, if High School Musical 3 can shoot for a Best Picture nomination, then so should The Hangover!

The 82nd Academy Awards will be held in Los Angeles on the 7th of March, 2010. The ceremony will be hosted by Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.

Discuss: Which comedy would you like to see score a Best Picture nomination?

  1. It wouldn't bother me as long as A Serious Man got in before it.

  2. I not really sure what all the fuss is about. It was a funny movie but it didnt quite reach the potential it had. For me "I love you man" was much more funnier and better written. It had a simpler concept that just worked a lot better. So why not nominate I love you man instead I reckon.

  3. I agree Travis, I Love You Man was a much funnier film.

  4. It doesnt really matter. The fact that there are ten spots up for grabs means the Oscars are becoming farcical. And I am a big fan of the night. All it does is promote average films that were never going to be seriously considered anyway

  5. hangover was misogynistic, homophobic and juvenile – worse, it wasnt funny!Am i the only person who hated this movie??
