Pride and Prejudice and Zombies scores a director

source: pajiba.com

Three Kings director David O. Russell has signed on to direct the feature film adaptation of Seth Graham-Smith’s Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, according to Pajiba.

Last week we reported that Natalie Portman had signed on to star in the film as feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet.

Graham-Smith’s novel takes Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice and introduces the threat of a zombie plague into proceedings. In Graham-Smith’s version, Bennet’s zombie-killing mission is distracted by the introduction of the frustratingly handsome Mr. Darcy.

It has been a while since we’ve seen a film from the famously volatile Russell (he got into a punch-up with George Clooney on the set of Three Kings, while a video of him screaming at Lily Tomlin during the filming of I Heart Huckabees became a viral sensation).

Two of his films are still in post-production awaiting release in 2010. The first is a health care comedy starring Jessica Biel entitled Nailed; the second is a boxing drama starring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale entitled The Fighter.

According to Pajiba, Russell will adapt the screenplay himself. Hopefully his involvement will be confirmed soon, along with the announcement of Portman’s fellow cast mates and an estimated release date.

Portman will produce the project with Handsomecharlie Films’ partner Annette Savitch and Darko Films’ Richard Kelly, Sean McKittrick and Ted Hamm.

Discuss: How do you feel about the talent this film is attracting? Any fans of the book out there (Austen or Graham-Smith’s)?

  1. Austen and Zombies, now in an action movie? What more could I ask for?

  2. i kind of hated the book, but all these names attached to the film project could almost make me believe it won't be atrocious.

  3. I bought this ook for my sister for Xmas, was cracking up just reading the back. Had no idea it was being made into a movie, looking forward to seeing how it comes out with what is turning out to be an all-star line-up.

  4. I love Pride and Prejudice and I love a good zombie movie so when I bought this book I thought it was going to be the best combination since wheatbix and bananas. It was more like my New Zealand friend's lettuce and marmite sandwich combo… Hopefully the movie adaption will be a smoother combination. Because frankly it felt like the book just ripped off Austen and randomly threw in zombies. As opposed to the story developing differently from having to rip off a zombie head than say serving tea.
