The Hurt Locker receives early Australian release date

Roadshow have decided to bring the Australian release of Oscar favourite The Hurt Locker forward a month. It will now arrive in Australian cinemas on the 25th of February, 2010.

The Hurt Locker opened in the United States back in June and was originally slated to go direct-to-DVD in Australia.

However, thanks to an overwhelmingly positive critical reaction (98% on Rotten Tomatoes), Roadshow relented and decided to release the flick on the 18th of March in Oz. Of course, with all this Oscar buzz swirling around the film, its director (Kathryn Bigelow) and star (Jeremy Renner), Roadshow have wisely decided to bring the film’s release forward – two weeks before the Oscar ceremony (March 7, 2010).

Interesting side note – Slumdog Millionaire was also at one point headed straight for DVD in the U.S.

In the past couple of weeks, The Hurt Locker has been positioned as the Oscar contender to beat, picking up the Best Picture prizes at the Gotham Awards, the Boston Society of Film Critics Awards, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, the Washington DC Area Film Critics Association Awards and the Chicago Film Critics’ Awards.

The Hurt Locker grabbed Golden Globe nominations for Best Film and Best Director last week. It was also named one of the top ten films of the year by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute.

Perhaps most significantly, it also made it into Simon Miraudo’s top 10 films of 2009.

Therefore, if you haven’t already been convinced, go see The Hurt Locker when it arrives on the 25th of February, 2010. I will post my official review closer to its release.
