The Karate Kid trailer debut!

As all of these holiday films head into cinemas, they come equipped with brand new trailers for some of the big releases of 2010. It’s been a smorgasbord of trailer debuts this week – today we are given our first look at the upcoming remake of The Karate Kid.

The Harold Zwart directed re-imagining stars Jaden Smith (son of Will) as Tre, a young boy who moves with his mother (Taraji P. Henson) from America to China. When he is beaten up by a bunch of bullies/martial arts enthusiasts, he employs Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) to teach him the ways of kung-fu.

The 1984 Karate Kid
was directed by John G. Avildson (Rocky) and starred Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita (in a Oscar nominated role).

It should be noted that karate is Japanese – not Chinese. There were rumours that the film would be retitled to The Kung-Fu Kid for accuracy’s sake. From the looks of the trailer, they’re sticking with the original title. Alright then.

The trailer is slick, that is for sure. But Jaden isn’t nearly as charming as his father (as anyone who has seen his abominable performance in The Day the Earth Stood Still will attest). Not sure if he’s quite cut out to be a leading man. I’m happy to be convinced otherwise.

The Karate Kid hits Australian cinemas September 10, 2010.

Discuss: I don’t know about you, but I hardly think “jacket on, jacket off” will catch on like “wax on, wax off” did.
