Head to Head – Dogville

Welcome to the latest edition of Head to Head, in which our Quickflix critic takes on our readers in a rip-snorting battle to the death! You pick the film, and we pick the fight!

This week, U.S. correspondent C. Fitzpatrick Biggs gave us a 5 star review of one of his favourite films of the decade, Lars Von Trier‘s Dogville. You can win free movie tickets by sending your mini-reviews to us here at Quickflix!

C. Fitzpatrick Biggs will argue FOR the film, while Quickflix critic Simon Miraudo will sit back and allow you the reader to argue AGAINST it. Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below. Spare no vitriol! Choose a side!

C. Fitzpatrick Biggs – 5/5

Perhaps Lars Von Trier’s best work, Dogville grabs hold of you and doesn’t let go. It all starts out with gunfire, a stranger named Grace (Nicole Kidman), and a philosopher who wants to put his theories on small town folk’s goodness to the test. The residents are untrusting, but Tom’s plan to have her do chores for the town to justify her stay convinces the town to vote for her. The nearest authorities come around asking for Grace and a wanted poster is put up. Now with the town reassessing Grace’s value to the town because of the danger they face for harboring her. She may find that Dogville’s teeth are going to be bared. The claustrophobic nature of the soundstage Dogville is filmed on really enhances the horror of Dogville. One of the best of the decade.

Simon Miraudo

Alright, I haven’t actually seen Dogville. “So, why are you taking Fitz on in a Head to Head battle over it,” you are probably asking. Well, if you had let me finish (!) I was going on to say that I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to moderate a debate over the quality of a Lars Von Trier film. He’s one of the most divisive filmmakers of all time, and Fitz’s rave is sure to inspire disdain amongst some of our readers. Therefore, I encourage YOU to take Fitz on. Or perhaps you will come to his defence. Either way, let us know your feelings on Dogville in the comments section below. I’m going to go add it to my Queue.

Now it’s over to you! What were your thoughts on Dogville? Let us know in the comments section below. And if you would like to be featured in the next Head to Head, and possibly win some free movie tickets, send your mini-reviews to us here at Quickflix!

  1. Ok I had this movie in my queue already and when I saw this I moved it up to the top and JUST finished watching itWow.I gotta say I was hoping I wouldn't like it, because from what I'd heard about the way it was staged and presented it sounded kind of like a giant wank (something we would NEVER expect from Von Trier)Still, I gotta say I really liked it. The acting is great and yes, even the strange way it is staged really lends itself to the story. A really terrific movie

  2. I really feel that if the story was filmed out in the middle of West Virginia the feeling of inescapable fear wouldn't have been achieved.BTW am I the only american that thinks this is a parable for religion and not the United States?
