Avatar becomes highest grossing film in Aus history

Twentieth Century Fox have announced that James Cameron‘s Avatar has become the highest grossing film in Australian cinema history. It usurped the position from Cameron’s previous film Titanic.

In just 22 days, Avatar has grossed $AUS63.1 million at the local box office, breaking Titanic’s record of $AUS57.65 million. It has also claimed a number of other milestones, including the biggest Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day (for a film that did not open on that day). It is also the fastest film to $AUS30 mil, $AUS40 mil and $AUS50 mil in Australian box office history.

Avatar’s global cume has risen to $US1.331 billion, making it the second highest grossing film of all time. It is hot on the tail of the long-time champion Titanic, which collected a hefty $US1.842 billion worldwide back in 1997.

Last week Avatar was nominated for Best Picture by the Producers Guild of America. It will compete against An Education, District 9, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Invictus, Precious, Star Trek, Up and Up in the Air. The PGA awards are considered one of the best indicators for Oscar success, with 13 of the past 20 winners going on to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

Discuss: Remember when we used to debate whether Avatar would turn a profit? We actually debated it!
