Ghostbusters 1 and 2 helmer Ivan Reitman has confirmed he will return to the director’s chair for the third installment of the hit comedy franchise.
In an interview with MTV, Reitman said he would be both producing and directing the upcoming film, currently slated for a 2011 release. It will be Reitman’s first film since 2006’s My Super Ex-Girlfriend.
Although he was tight-lipped on details, he did reveal that screenwriters Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky (Year One, The U.S. Office) have handed in their first draft and are now working on a second.
“Good work is being done and all of us have our fingers crossed,” he said.
He did not confirm or deny Sigourney Weaver‘s speculation that Bill Murray‘s character Pete Venkmen would return in the third film as a ghost.
The film will focus on a new collection of young Ghostbusters, potentially mentored by the characters from the first two films.
Reitman hopes to begin shooting this year.
Discuss: So it looks like the band is getting back together. Glad to see Reitman directing, or is this project just a bad idea?
