Head to Head – Land of the Lost

Welcome to the latest edition of Head to Head, in which our Quickflix critic takes on our readers in a rip-snorting battle to the death! You pick the film, and we pick the fight!

This week, Steve Brady told Will Ferrell to disappear into another dimension by attacking his film Land of the Lost. For his troubles, he picked up a double pass to In the Loop. You can win free movie tickets too by sending your mini-reviews to us here at Quickflix!

Steve Brady will argue AGAINST the film while Quickflix critic Simon Miraudo will argue FOR it. Let us know in the comments section below who you agree with. Spare no vitriol! Choose your side! There can only be one winner!

Steve Brady – 1/5

Given that motion pictures are about vision and sound, it’s unusual for some movies to have a smell associated with them, but boy do some of them stink. One of them is “Land of the Lost”, the latest vehicle for Will Ferrell. And boy, is this one putrid movie! The main problem is that it is not particularly funny. It’s just stupid. Dumb. I am all for abstract or absurdist humour but this is pre-undergraduate humour with a Hollywood budget. They have aimed at the lowest common denominator and way undershot. A movie such as this has to have a veneer of credibility to hold it together, but there is none. To me, it smells like a bunch of studio execs sitting around their large Hollywood boardroom with their cigars and Chivas in hand, realizing that they are contracted to produce another Will Ferrell movie, but with no script or story in mind. So, scratching for inspiration they ask themselves what old TV series has there NOT been a movie adaptation made of yet? The senior movie exec ponders half out loud, “Land of the Lost?” and thus the yes men swing into action. Land of the Lost? More like Land of the Lame!

Simon Miraudo – 3.5/5

I never thought that I would spend so much of my time defending Land of the Lost. I suppose it’s my own fault, but I can’t help it! I really like this movie, as strange and dumb as it is. The funny thing is Steve, I agree with you for the most part. I too believe Land of the Lost was concocted by lazy studio execs looking to make a quick buck. However, that must have been the extent of the studio involvement, because it seems as if director Brad Silberling and stars Ferrell and Danny McBride ran amok during the production of the film and did whatever the hell they felt like, independent of script and acceptable social mores. As I stated in my review and reiterated in a previous Head to Head, this is a $100 million ‘children’s movie’ packed full of sex jokes and drug taking. You have to appreciate such flagrant anarchy.

Now it’s over to you! What were your thoughts on Land of the Lost? Let us know in the comments section below. If you would like to be featured in the next Head to Head and possibly win some free movie tickets, send your mini-reviews to us here at Quickflix!
