John C. Reilly vs. Jonah Hill in Cyrus!

Earlier today we looked at some of the more exciting films to debut at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. One of those films was the new comedy from mumblecore pioneers The Duplass Brothers, Cyrus, starring John C. Reilly, Marisa Tomei and Jonah Hill.

Well, much like a basket of kittens from the heavens, Fox Searchlight have officially released a trailer for those of us unable to see the film in Park City.

John C. Reilly plays John, a lonely divorcee who falls for the sweet-natured Molly (Marisa Tomei). Their courtship becomes strained when Molly’s son Cyrus (Jonah Hill) turns out to be a little left-of-center. Catherine Keener also stars as John’s ex-wife.

Mark Duplass has written, directed and produced eight independent films since 1996, helping to establish the mumblecore aesthetic. His most well-known works (and the term “well-known” is used very loosely) are The Puffy Chair and Baghead, which he co-directed with brother Jay. Cyrus is their third collaboration.

I love this. It feels like the brothers Duplass have really captured the spontaneity of their earlier films. It meshes surprisingly well with Hill and Reilly’s Apatow-esque improvisational sensibilities.

As if we weren’t already excited, the trailer has now catapulted Cyrus to the top of our most anticipated films of 2010 list.

There is no release date yet for the U.S. or Australia. However, with Fox Searchlight behind it, I doubt we will have to wait long to see this flick reach our shores. It will have its Sundance premiere on the 23rd of January.

Discuss: What do you think? We know Reilly and Tomei are solid actors, but can Hill pull off drama as well as he does comedy?
