Inglourious Basterds triumphs at SAG awards

Quentin Tarantino’s motley crew of Inglourious Basterds took the top prize at the Screen Actors Guild Awards yesterday. The films’ cast, including Brad Pitt, Christoph Waltz, Melanie Laurent and, hilariously, Mike Myers, were awarded Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

Jeff Bridges and Sandra Bullock received Outstanding Actor and Actress for their respective roles in Crazy Heart and The Blind Side. Oscar faves Christoph Waltz and Mo’Nique took home (yet another) Supporting Actor and Actress award for Basterds and Precious.

Over in TV, the cast of Mad Men claimed Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. Surprisingly, the cast of Glee won the same prize for a Comedy Series, trumping favourites 30 Rock and The Office.

30 Rock did manage a couple of wins, collecting Outstanding Actor and Actress in a Comedy Series for stars Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey. Michael C. Hall was named Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for his work on Dexter, while Julianna Margulies won Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for The Good Wife.

The stunt teams for Star Trek and TV series 24 were awarded Outstanding Stunt Ensemble.

Sadly, the Basterds’ victory does not put them atop the Academy Award Best Picture pile. Leading Oscar prognosticators still tip Avatar (which was NOT nominated for any SAGs) for a victory this March.

Discuss: What would you rather take home the top prize at the Oscars? Inglourious Basterds or Avatar?
