Avatar doesn’t have the Oscar race all wrapped up quite yet. Kathryn Bigelow‘s Iraq war drama The Hurt Locker has been named Best Picture by the Producers Guild of America. The winner of the PGA is one of the strongest precursors of the Oscar season, having correlated with the Academy Awards’ Best Picture winner five times in the past nine years.
Accepting the award was director Bigelow, screenwriter Mark Boal, and co-producers Nicolas Chartier and Greg Shapiro.
The Hurt Locker beat Golden Globe winner Avatar, SAG award winner Inglourious Basterds, also-rans Up in the Air, Invictus, Precious, Up and An Education as well as surprise sci-fi nominees Star Trek and District 9.
Other winners included Up (Best Animated Feature), The Cove (Documentary Feature), 30 Rock (TV comedy series) and Mad Men (TV drama series).
The Academy Award nominees will be announced February 2nd. The Oscars will be handed out March 7th.
The Hurt Locker hits Australian cinemas February 25th.
Discuss: We’re getting close to the final stretch, and it’s looking like the final showdown will be between James Cameron and his ex Kathryn Bigelow. So, Avatar vs. The Hurt Locker? Who ya got?!
