James Cameron‘s Avatar has done the unthinkable and sunk the Titanic to become the highest grossing film of all time. Cameron now holds claim to directing the two biggest films of all time.

On Monday, the sci-fi epic’s worldwide tally hit $US1.859 billion, trumping the $US1.843 billion gross of Cameron’s previous film Titanic. These figures have not been adjusted for inflation.

Titanic held onto the top spot for almost thirteen years, beating off competition from Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and The Dark Knight. Although these films cracked the $US1 billion mark worldwide, none could come within $US600 million of Titanic’s final tally.

Cameron’s Avatar took only six weeks to make it to the top. With Oscar nominations announced next week (of which Avatar is a shoe-in to collect quite a few), the money is expected to keep pouring in.

Of course, The Hollywood Reporter is keen to remind us to curb our enthusiasm. Adjusted for inflation, Gone With The Wind is the highest grossing film of all time. It collected $US400 million worldwide in 1939 – which equals about $US6 billion today.

Discuss: Can Avatar crack $US2 billion?
