Sam Worthington to play Dracula?

Avatar star Sam Worthington is in negotiations to play The Great Fanged One in fellow Aussie Alex Proyas‘ upcoming flick Dracula: Year Zero.

The film explores the origin of Dracula, combining traditional vampire mythology with the history of notorious Prince Vlad the Impaler (pictured above, kinda). Dracula will be the flawed hero of the film, embroiled in a tragic love story.

Latino Review
had the scoop on Worthington’s involvement in Universal Studio’s $US100 million project, later confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.

Dracula: Year Zero is based on a spec script written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.

Universal need a hit … bad. Their 2009 was disastrous, thanks to high-profile under-performers Land of the Lost, Duplicity and State of Play. A couple of weeks ago, Vin Diesel announced that Universal would produce two sequels for their Fast and Furious franchise; a move reeking of desperation.

It’s interesting that Universal would place their blockbuster chips on another mythological horror film, especially after the troubles that plagued their upcoming release The Wolfman (whose $US85 million budget has allegedly ballooned to $US165 million).

It’s hard not to see a connection between Dracula: Year One and the famous Frank Miller comic Batman: Year One, which went on to be the (loose) inspiration for Christopher Nolan‘s Batman Begins, which reignited the Batman franchise for Warner Bros, to much cricial acclaim and financial gain. Surely Universal are looking to achieve the same.

Dracula: Year One, directed by Alex Proyas, is looking at a 2011 release.

Discuss: Could Dracula be a new franchise for Universal?
