Penelope Cruz is currently in talks to star alongside Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
It is unknown what role Cruz will play, but The Hollywood Reporter claim that “she is to be [Captain Jack] Sparrow’s foil and equal in many ways.”
The fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise will begin production in Hawaii mid-2010. The project will be helmed by Rob Marshall, replacing series veteran Gore Verbinski.
Depp will reprise the role of Captain Jack Sparrow, but neither Keira Knightley nor Orlando Bloom will return for Stranger Tides.
Cruz has previously worked with Marshall on Nine, for which she recently received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Slashfilm suggest that Cruz will no longer star in Lars von Trier’s Melancholia. She’s probably relieved.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will hit cinemas May 20, 2011.
Discuss: I don’t know about you, but I’d prefer to see her in Melancholia.
