Wolverine 2 begins shooting January 2011

The next installment of the X-Men Origins: Wolverine saga is moving ahead, with the great-clawed one heading to Japan. The film will start lensing January 2011. And obviously, Hugh Jackman will return as Wolverine – shirtless, no doubt.

The production of Wolverine 2 was pretty much confirmed following the first film’s massive $US87 million opening weekend back in May 2009.

Screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie (X-Men, The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie) has finally finished the Wolverine 2 script that he began working on back in August.

As Jackson Jackman promised, the script focuses on Wolverine’s adventure in Japan, inspired by the classic comic run penned by Frank Miller and Chris Claremont. Head over to Slashfilm for a (potentially spoiler-filled) rundown of the proposed storyline.

There is no director attached to the project yet, but it seems unlikely that X-Men Origins: Wolverine helmer Gavin Hood would return (Hood allegedly had several run-ins with Fox over the creative direction of the first film).

We suggested back in August that McQuarrie was hired as a means of drawing Bryan Singer back to the X-Men family. Singer revealed back in December that he was indeed working on X-Men Origins: First Class. If that project doesn’t go into production soon, I can imagine a scenario in which Singer is courted over to helm the new Wolverine picture.

Discuss: Are you excited to see Wolverine head to Japan, or would you prefer to see another X-Man get their own origin picture?

  1. I absolutely cannot wait for this to come out. Wolverine was a fantastic movie and Hugh Jackman played a fantastic role.

  2. You misspelled Jackman as Jackson at the start of one of the paragraphs

  3. Good catch Anon. Clearly I am refusing to let a certain someones untimely death go.

  4. I'm sure I'll enjoy another Wolverine movie but I'd love to see a profesor X movie and posibly an Xmen 4
