Chris Evans to star as Captain America?

This is quickly becoming 2010’s most labourious entertainment news story. Chris Evans is now reportedly the lead contender to star as Captain America in Marvel’s upcoming feature adaptation of the legendary comic character.

UPDATE (23/03/10): It’s official! Evans is The Cap’!

The exclusive comes from The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog. Evans was not included on the original shortlist of actors in line for the role (which you can see here), nor did he screen test with any potential female co-stars.

However, the actor already has a relationship with Marvel, having starred as Johnny Storm in two Fantastic Four films. If he wishes, the role of Steve Rogers/Captain America is his for the taking.

Neither Marvel nor Evans’ reps have confirmed these developments.

As discussed last week, Hugo Weaving is in final talks to play the film’s lead villain, Red Skull. Meanwhile, three Brits are rumoured to be in the running to play Roger’s love interest, Peggy Carter. They are Alice Eve, Emily Blunt and Keira Knightley.

The First Avenger: Captain America, to be directed by Joe Johnston, is set for release July 2011.

Discuss: How do you think John Krasinski feels about all this?
