Kevin Smith’s Red State gets green light

Kevin Smith‘s long-gestating horror film Red State has finally been given the green light. The director confirmed the development on his Twitter feed.

“I talk about lots of stuff I wanna do that either happens years later or never happens at all. Happy to report RED STATE is not the latter. First draft was dated 9/5/07. Looks like we start shooting this July. Took nearly three years, but we’re finally gonna roll on RED,” he said.

Smith has previously revealed that Red State will be based around a Fred Phelps-like character, the notorious American pastor whose various exploits are too offensive to discuss here (but still make for jaw-dropping reading).

When asked whether or not the film had been green lit by a studio or if it will be independently funded, he responded thusly:

“(*Marches across big lawn, up front porch*) I’m home, Momma,” he enigmatically answered.

Slashfilm suggest that The Weinstein Company will produce Red State, despite the fact that they originally passed on the film several years ago.

Kevin Smith owes much of his career to the Weinstein Brothers, after they purchased Clerks for Miramax back in the 1990s. Smith had a largely fruitful career with the duo up until 2008, when his raunchy comedy Zack and Miri Make A Porno disappointed at the box office (the result of a disastrous marketing campaign).

Smith’s last film, Cop Out, was his first for a major studio (Warner Bros) and also the first that he did not write himself.

The director also revealed that he is currently writing Hit Somebody, the ice hockey dramedy set to star Seann William Scott. It will likely begin shooting straight after Red State, although it is unclear whether that will be for WB or also for an independent.

Discuss: Glad to see Smith working on his own scripts again?
