Walt Disney Pictures have announced that they will finally bring the classic 1980s sitcom The Golden Girls to the big screen. The picture will be a reboot of sorts, taking place when Rose, Dorothy, Blanche and Sophia were freewheeling young women.
Director Kathryn Bigelow, fresh from her Best Director Oscar for The Hurt Locker, has been tapped to helm the picture. Golden Girls: The Movie is expected to target the same audience as the Sex and the City film, and will similarly feature raunchy sex scenes and a zeitgeist-capturing portrayal of modern women.
Carey Mulligan (An Education) and Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) will star as roommates Dorothy and Rose, originally made famous by Bea Arthur and Betty White. In a particularly interesting move, Blanche, originally played by Rue McClanahan, will be portrayed in the reboot by Zoe Saldana. Italian bombshell Monica Belluci will play Sophia, mother of Dorothy (portrayed in television show by the similarly sizzling Estelle Getty).
The film is expected to hit cinemas June 2012, in 3D no less.
Discuss: Do we smell a second consecutive Oscar for Bigelow?
I'm starting a slow clap just for you, brilliant work.
Oh dear – I loved the golden girls and have the box set but do not think this is a good move, no one can ever replace Rue, Estelle, Bea and Betty.
April Fools?????
